Common Anti-Abortion Arguments

Roy D'Silva
Those who are against abortion, often say that nothing can justify the killing of a living being. The following story provides some of the common anti-abortion arguments.
A lot of countries around the world have legalized abortion. Morality, religion, ethics - all these issues dominate the discourse of discussion on whether abortion is justified or not. One of the archaic views that we have against abortion is that 'nobody has the right to take the life of a living being', and that the fetus being in the preliminary stages of life is a living thing, which is why killing it amounts to cold-blooded murder.

Arguments Against Abortion

Over the last few years, numerous studies have revealed that abortion, indeed, can lead to health problems in women. There are many who believe that killing an unborn child must be opposed tooth and nail. Let us take a look at some anti-abortion arguments.
One of the fundamental arguments is that nobody has a right to curtail the life of something that providence has created. The fetus has a soul, which if allowed to bloom will result into the formation of a human being. However, when we kill the fetus, we deny someone a chance to exist in the world. As a fetus is too small to protect itself and it is dependent on its mother for survival, killing it amounts to a cold-blooded murder.
Children are the gift of God. Everything that happens in this world is because of the wishes of the God. If he wants a child to be born, he will take care of it as well. To kill a blossoming soul means that we are putting a hindrance in the way of God. If providence has given, it shall arrange for it too.
Simply put, this means that if a child has been brought on earth, he or she should be given a full chance to live a life, as God must have planned something for him/her.
While it cannot be said whether an abortion is an unforgivable act, it is of course an unforgettable event. It plays havoc with the psychology and the future life of the entire family. The woman who goes ahead with aborting a child finds it difficult to cope with the stress of coming to terms with the fact that she was a party in putting an end to the life of her own child. Surveys over the years have found that stress levels are higher in women who have undergone abortion, as compared to other women.
Abortion could also give rise to various medical complications in a woman. Some general complications arising in women due to abortions are blocked Fallopian tubes, weakened cervix, uterine scarring, and damage to the woman's reproductive system, which may make her unable to conceive in the future. Apart from these common problems, there is also an increase in the probability of miscarriages, stillbirths, and premature births. Abortion is also related to the increase in chances of breast, uterine and cervical cancer in women.
Abortion is against the Hippocratic Oath. Doctors and nurses who perform an abortion, break the golden rule that they will do everything in their capacity to save a life.
Hundreds of millions of dollars are raised by the government by taxing the common man. This hard-earned money ought to be spent on areas of utmost concern. However, when this money is spent on abortion - which is morally wrong, it creates a lot of resentment among people.
There are many states in America where illegal abortion is still being practiced. Illegal abortions greatly increase the health-risk to the mother, apart from the aforementioned situations. Illegal abortions may not be totally hygienic and may create a leeway for numerous infections and diseases.
The effects of abortion on a woman can be catastrophic, but we also do accept that there are situations where a woman or her family is left with no other choice, like in the cases of rape and incest. Abortion should be used only when there is no other alternative, but, treating it as another type of contraception is not justified at all.
